There are 2 major events in April for Sweden, Easter and Valborg. April is often a time for families to gather, like Thanksgiving. Instead of a turkey, Swedes eats smorgasbord centered around eggs. The majority of Swedes would spend the holidays in the countryside. Normally Swedes would own a holiday cottage in the countryside and it would be the first time they would use it after winter. It is a prime time visiting Sweden in April because there is less tourists but many tourist places and businesses are open.

 

The Weather in April

The weather will be unpredictable. You could have sun one day and the next day snowfall or heavy rain. The temperature will between -6 degrees Celsius to +12 degrees Celsius.

Things to do, see and eat

  • It is highly suggested to dine at small rural restaurants, such as Lustfyllt and Hemma på Hult, where they have both traditional and contemporary Easter food. The people at these places could also tell you stories about Swedish Easter celebration.
  • Go to campsites near lakes to enjoy the first sign of Spring by hiking or biking in the forest with snow still on the trees. If you don’t mind the cold water, you could also take a swim!
  • At the end of April or first of May, Swedes and many other European countries celebrates Valborg (Walpurgis) night. It has become a night for gathering around a bonfire and drinking with your family and friends in Sweden.
